Liberty Institute Voter Questionnaire Correction & Additional Comments
1. A State law permitting local governments the option of holding an election for a local transportation tax to fund local transportation needs.
STRONGLY OPPOSE: Liberty Institute is correctly reporting the answer the Medina campaign provided, but that answer was incorrect and not consistent with the position Debra has consistently maintained when asked about the Local Option Tax throughout the campaign. Debra Medina absolutely, unequivocally opposes the Local Option Tax and has been on the record opposing it since its inception.
When the Dallas Morning News asked about TLOTA:, Debra stated, "Allowing local governments to raise and allocate their own transportation funds sounds good in theory, but when those funds are on top of existing misdirected taxes and fees it is too much for the people to bear." The Medina Campaign's Transportation Policy:, released last week, calls double taxation for the same transportation services "unethical." In addition, Debra and the Campaign are proud to note that several of the core campaign staff worked closely with the groups that defeated TLOTA and testified against it to the Transportation Committee last San Jacinto Day:
Witness List- Penny Freeman is Debra's campaign manager
- Read King is the campaign's North Texas Field Coordinator
- Chris Howe is responsible for the campaign's data management
4. Legalize casino-style gambling in order to dedicate a portion of the revenues to property tax reduction or to increase money for education,
FAVOR: There is a fundamental inconsistency in our state's position on gambling that the people of Texas need to resolve so that our laws are consistent, fair, and just. The most correct answer to this question is "whatever the people of Texas decide," but Debra does want to make sure we have the conversation. Our Constitution outlaws gambling as immoral, then allows some entities to engage in it anyway. It sends a mixed message to our children to have some gambling outlawed, some allowed, and use funds from some gambling sources to fund education. The people of Texas need to resolve this inconsistency, and as governor Debra Medina will enforce whatever they decide.
12. Texas should ratify a Federal Marriage Amendment, which limits marriage nationwide to a man and a woman.
STRONGLY OPPOSE: Debra supports the Texas Marriage Amendment Act of 2005, which clearly defines marriage as "a union between a man and a woman". However, as there is no provision in the US Constitution for the federal government to be involved in marriage, it is and should properly remain a state sovereignty issue to be resolved by the states.
